New York Botanical Garden High School Explainer Program
On this week’s opportunities post, we have chosen to feature the New York Botanical Garden’s High School Explainer Program. Although there is some information in the directory, this post will go more in depth about what the program is and why it’s a great opportunity for you to take advantage of!
The High School Explainer Program is a science-based internship where you can work as a volunteer educator in NYBG’s Discovery Center and the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. In it, you would work closely with children and their families to create cool experiences with them based on nature found in the Garden, including a variety of activity stations.
The internship takes place at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, which can be accessed using public transportation (they provide with a MetroCard). It is a really fun and cool way to get involved with the outdoors and gain a new appreciation for nature around you, especially if you are interested in plant science and ecology. Additionally, it is completely interactive: you will always be interacting with families to explain concepts to them in fun ways, while also constantly interacting with your fellow interns.
To get involved, there is an admissions process which can be found on the link below. This process involves an interview, so it is said that the process is competitive. Additionally, you are allowed to become an “Advanced Explainer” once you have completed the program, which means that you can be invited to work on multiple special projects in the future.
We chose this program to be featured as our post because it is a free, valuable experience. Not only do they provide you with transportation costs, but they also provide you with rich experiences. The program is all about interacting with countless people and becoming an educational guide, which can teach really valuable people skills. More than that, it teaches you about science in a hands-on way, in an garden environment where you are directly involved with nature.
If you would like to learn more, click the link below or watch the featured video on our Instagram! The video is a short explanation of the program explained by Laura, a past intern from 2019, so you can directly hear from someone who would know best. If you have specific questions about the internship, you can contact laurapreka@gmail.com.
Don’t hesitate to email or DM us if you have any questions! We are always open to suggestions and to hearing about more opportunities you think should be featured.
See you next week with another opportunities post!
